IMF: US, EU woes may knock African growth

http://www.fin24.com/Economy/IMF-US-EU-woes-may-knock-Africa-growth-20110920

Washington – Sub-Saharan Africa is poised to maintain its economic expansion in the near term, but faltering US or European recovery could threaten exports, aid and capital flows, the IMF said on Tuesday.

In its latest World Economic Outlook update, the fund outlined the spillover risks for the region of any further deterioration of the global economic environment, although it had so far escaped any significant effects from the slowdown.

Reflecting these risks, the IMF revised a few notches downwards its real GDP growth forecast for Sub-Saharan Africa for this year, putting it at 5.2% compared to 5.5% predicted in June.

The region’s GDP in 2012 was forecast to expand 5.8%, slightly down from the 5.9% seen in June.

World Bank chief Robert Zoellick said on Monday the ripple effects of the growing debt crisis in advanced economies were already starting to feed through to developing nations.

“A faltering US or European recovery could undermine prospects for exports, remittances, official aid and private capital flows,” the IMF warned for Sub-Saharan Africa.

But if the rise in financial and economic instability in major advanced economies remained contained, the African region was set for continued expansion in the near term, it said.

Political uncertainty and weather shocks had the potential to dampen its growth prospects, however. There were also considerable variations in the outlook across the region.

Average growth for low-income countries, largely shielded from the global crisis due to limited integration into world manufacturing and financial networks, was forecast at 6% this year, on the back of strong domestic demand and accelerating exports.

This would increase to 6.5% next year as Ivory Coast’s economy returns to normal after the political disruption triggered by the 2010 elections, Kenya’s investment levels strengthen, and large oil and mining projects come online in Niger and Sierra Leone, the IMF said.

But the severe drought in the Horn of Africa had caused a humanitarian crisis in some economies and fueled inflation.

Middle-income countries were more vulnerable to a global slowdown and the recovery in South Africa, the region’s largest economy, was being complicated by this and other factors, such as a surge in unemployment, high household debt, low capacity utilization and substantial real exchange rate appreciation.

Nevertheless, South Africa’s growth was expected to pick up to about 3.5% over the next 12 months, driven by private consumption and reinvigorated investment, the fund said.

Growth in Sub-Saharan Africa’s oil exporting economies was projected to rise to 7.2% in 2012 from 6% this year, thanks to continued strength in domestic public investment spending and in spite of lower than originally projected oil prices, according to the IMF regional outlook.

This would include a strong rebound in oil production in Angola following a disruption in 2011.

The IMF recommended that with strong recovery underway, Sub-Saharan Africa should return to long-standing priorities of improving policy and institutional frameworks, building resilience to commodity price swings and developing financial markets

Malema makes Forbes List

http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/Politics/Malema-makes-Forbes-power-list-20110915

Johannesburg- ANC Youth League president Julius Malema is one of Africa’s 10 most powerful young men, according to a list compiled by business magazine Forbes.

“The ANCYL wields enormous power in South African politics, and played a pivotal role in the election of incumbent president, Jacob Zuma, during the 2009 presidential elections,” the magazine said.

“Malema, its leader, remains one of the country’s most divisive and polarising figures, frequently stirring controversy for his inflammatory rhetoric and racial slurs.”

Three other South African men made the top 10 list – billionaire Mark Shuttleworth, advocate Euvin Naidoo and Standard Bank CEO David Munro.

Shuttleworth founded Ubuntu, a computer operating system distributed as free open source software. He also set up the Shuttleworth Foundation, a trust that funds individuals actively engaged in social change projects.

Naidoo is president of the SA Chamber of Commerce in America and “one of the most renowned advocates for western investments in Africa”, according to Forbes.

Munro, 38, was selected by the World Economic Forum as the 2009 Young Global Leader.

Democratic Republic of Congo president Joseph Kabila and Madagascar president Andry Rajoelina are also on the list.

Women

Five South African women made the magazine’s “20 Youngest Power Women in Africa” list – Mvelaphanda Group CEO Yolanda Cuba, media mogul Khanyi Dhlomo, Shanduka Group CEO Phuti Malabie, entrepreneur Lisa Kropman and Ernst & Young senior partner Jonitha Gugu Msibi.

The Mvelaphanda Group is a conglomerate listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. “In 2008, the Wall Street Journal named Phuti as one of 50 women in the world to watch,” Forbes said.

Shanduka is listed as one of South Africa’s largest African, black-owned and managed investment holding companies.

Kropman is the founder of Business Place, a group of business centres that support black entrepreneurs in Southern Africa.

Forbes said Msibi served as a public sector and government leader inAfrica. “She is a key adviser to several government leaders inAfrica, and was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2011.”

South African Contemporary Art Exhibition 2011

The richness of art culture in South Africa

To continue with the buzz of 2010 South Africa World Cup, the South African Consulate-General firstly presents the South African Contemporary Art Exhibition 2011 in Hong Kong.  The theme of the photo exhibition includes lifestyle, people and wildlife, adventure and natural scenery, to present the richness of South Africa in different angles.  Also, the oil paintings of South Africans emerging abstract artist, Lee Chaldecott will be presented. To her art represents the beauty of the world in all in complexities. Her paintings truly shift people’s consciousness into a mysterious world.

Oliver Kingston an emerging digital photographic artist has this to say:

“Photography has always held the allure of essence through images.  The ability to communicate hidden meanings and subtext has previously been a form of subconscious prompting limited to film and literature.  The birth of the digital photographic medium has now changed that in an exciting and beautiful new way”.

“Through this exhibition, we would like to exhibit the contemporary art and beautiful scenery of South Africa, to introduce South Africa in a different and more sophisticated way than people are traditionally used to.  We hope that this first exhibition will be enjoyed by the Hong Kong community as we would like to do a bigger and more diverse one next year. “ said Nomatemba Tambo, the Consul-General of South African Consulate-General, HKSAR/ MSAR.
